Last week we attended the Surface Design Show at the Business Design Centre to check out new and exciting innovations in the world of surfaces and to support our client Blueair in its collaboration with Quiet Mark who used the show to launch its new digital platform. From quartz to clay, we scoped out the latest trends in surface design.

Exhibitors specialising in the surfaces sector showcased new and advanced design concepts in surfaces and materials. Much like Architect@Work, there was a strong focus on the concept of biophilic design. Hamish Kilburn, editor of Hotel Designs, turned the spotlight on this topic to better understand how designers’ methods for injecting biophilic design into projects is allowing new possibilities to emerge in surface design.

The Surface Design Show was also the perfect opportunity for Quiet Mark to launch its new digital website, Acoustics Academy. In its journey to create demand for the use of quieter technology and noise reduction solutions in our living, working and outdoor environments, Quiet Mark has developed this new online platform in order to further equip and empower architects, designers and specifiers with expert approved acoustics materials, products and solutions for every type of building application. It will act as one knowledge hub for responsible sound-design to transform all living spaces.

The TED-style seminar led by Poppy Szkiler and Simon Gosling from Quiet Mark saw experts in their field speak on the importance of the specification of quiet appliances in new builds – new territory for the Quiet Mark brand. The expert line-up included professionals from BDP, BASWA acoustic, Saint-Gobain Ecophon, Arup, Enfield Speciality Doors, International WELL Building Institute, and familiar face Oliver Heath of Oliver Heath Designs who is a global expert in biophilic design and its benefits to health and wellbeing. Oliver is also a fan of Blueair’s award-winning air purifiers and understands the importance of clean air. As part of its collaboration with Quiet Mark and to support the launch of Acoustics Academy, Blueair supplied an air purifier as a prize for a competition which was hosted at the event.

The show was a great opportunity to not only scope out innovative designs in the surfaces and materials sector, but also to catch up with familiar faces and network with some new contacts.
